Korea’s Jung, Japan’s Kikuchi Win Gold on Day 2 of Bangkok Asia-Oceania Zonal Fencing Championships

BANGKOK, Thailand, June 18, 2018—Korean Olympic bronze medallist Jinsun Jung took top-honours in men’s epee on the second day of competition at the Bangkok Asia-Oceania Zonal Fencing Championships. Japan’s Komaki Kukuchi won the women’s foil event, with nearly 150 fencers participating in the day’s combined competitions. In all, six days of fencing will feature 12 individual and team events at the Championships, taking place on the Rangsit Campus of Bangkok’s Thammasat University.

In the individual men’s epee competition gold-medal round, Jung defeated Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Alexanin, 15-12. Alexanin overtook Japan’s Koki Kano in the semi-final, 12-6, while Jung beat Hong Kong’s Hoi Sun Fong, 15-11.

Kikuchi overcame Korea’s World Championship silver medallist, Hee Sook Jeon, in the individual women’s foil event final, 15-10. Jeon fenced China’s Yiting Fu in the semi-final round, winning by a point, 7-6, and in the same round Kikuchi also had a close bout against Korea’s Olympic silver medallist, Hyunhee Nam, 15-14.

The overall top-eight ranking for men’s individual epee at the Bangkok Asia-Oceania Zonal Fencing Championships includes Jinsun Jung (KOR, gold), Dmitriy Alexanin (KAZ, silver), Hoi Sun Fong (HKG, bronze), Koki Kano (JPN, bronze), Ho Tin Ng (HKG), Youngjun Kweon (KOR), Satoru Uyama (JPN) and Oleg Sokolov (UZB).

The top-eight rankings from individual women’s foil include Komaki Kikuchi (JPN, gold), Hee Sook Jeon (KOR, silver), Hyunhee Nam (KOR, bronze), Yiting Fu (CHN, bronze), Hyo Jin Hong (KOR), Karin Miyawaki (JPN), Yue Shi (CHN) and Qingyuan Chen (CHN).
