Foil Grand Prix Final in Shanghai This Weekend

The third and final foil Grand Prix of the season takes place this weekend in Shanghai, where more than 400 of the world’s top women’s and men’s foilists will compete for gold at the Haopu Film and Television Base.

In the women’s field, the fencer to watch is undoubtedly the 2nd-ranked Martina Favaretto of Italy. Favaretto has reached the podium four times this season, highlighted by back-to-back victories at the last two World Cups in Istanbul, Turkiye, two weeks ago and Cairo, Egypt, in April. She also earned bronze at the March Grand Prix in Lima, Peru, and captured gold at the season-opening World Cup last November in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Favaretto will face strong competition from three of her Italian teammates: 3rd-ranked Martina Batini, 5th-ranked Arianna Errigo, and 8th-ranked Anna Cristino.

On the men’s side, Italy again leads the spotlight with two top contenders. Paris 2024 silver medalist and 9th-ranked Filippo Macchi claimed gold at the recent World Cup in Istanbul, while Guillaume Bianchi captured consecutive Grand Prix titles in Lima, Peru, in March and Turin, Italy, in February.
