Bangladesh Hosts Third National Fencing Championships

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Nov. 24-28, 2018—The 3rd National Fencing Championship of Bangladesh was held in Dhaka, with about 375 fencers and 14 teams participating from clubs, schools and the military. The event took place at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium, with all weapons represented.

Bangladesh Ansar and VDP (paramilitary troops) took four gold, three silver and four bronze medals and were the overall champions of the event. The Border Guard Bangladesh team took four golds, one silver and six bronze medals, and were named runners-up for overall champion. Following the top two, the Bangladesh Navy took three gold, six silver and two bronze medals; the Bangladesh Army took one gold, two silver and seven bronze medals; the Quantum Cosmo School too three silver medals; and the Mirpur Fencing Club took two bronze medals.

The opening ceremony’s chief guest was Mr. Shahed Reza, Secretary-General of the Bangladesh Olympic Association. Bangladesh Fencing Association Secretary-General Major (Ret’d.) Qamrul Islam gave the welcome speech, acknowledging the guests and participants, and stating “We have been able to hold six fencing tournaments during one year, and I am grateful to Bangladesh Fencing Association’s President Shoeb Chowdhury and Bangladesh Olympic Association’s Secretary-General Syed Shahed Reza for their support, dynamism and cooperation.” Mr. Chowdhury added, “We are very hopeful about winning medals from South Asian Games in fencing.”

Several notable international fencing officials participated and oversaw the tournament, including FIE referee Mr. Navendran Lohith (IND) and national coach Mr. Maduma Sello Given (RSA).

The closing ceremony included Lt. General Sheikh Mamum Khaled, SUP, rcds, psc, PhD, the Commandant of the National Defence College in Dhaka.
