In exactly one month from today, the 2013 FIE World Championships competitions will kick off in Budapest, Hungary. More than 800 fencers are expected in Hungary’s capital to determine who is best in the world of fencing in twelve title events from 5 -12 August.

The Opening Ceremony will take place in the evening of  4 August, followed by two days of qualifications (5 and 6 August) while the first finals will be on 7 August in women’s foil and men’s sabre. Team competitions will start on 10 August.

Many teams will feature athletes that have competed successfully in the 2012 London Olympic Games, such as Aaron Szilagy (HUN), Ruben Limardo Gascon (VEN), Alaaeldin Abouelkassem (EGY), Andrea Baldini (ITA) and Elisa Di Francisca (ITA). Italian five time Olympic gold medallist Valentina Vezzali just gave birth to her second child in May 2013 and it is not yet sure if she will participate or not.

One month prior to the event, the preparations for the event are well under way. On 4 July, the Hungarian Post issued a special stamp for the World Championships designed by Agnes Berta. The stamp shows two fencers during a fencing bout and 200.025 copies were released.

During the world championships, the FIE will celebrate its 100 anniversary and will show the FIE 100 Hall of Fame as well as an exhibition about the history of fencing and the FIE, making valuable fencing artefacts available to the public. Also, the elections to the FIE Athletes Commission will be conducted.
