Team Russia tops overall medal count

Fencers of the Russian national team finished atop the overall medal standings at the World Fencing Championships that took place in the Tennis Academy, Kazan between July 15 and 23. A total of 12 sets of medals were contested. The host nation climbed the top spot of podium three times, Italy and France boast three gold medals as well, and the USA, Germany and Ukraine have one gold each. Two national teams at once won the same number of medals - Russia and Italy took 8 medals but the Russian fencers scored the most points - 378 against 352. France gained 7 medals. The medals were won by 13 national teams overall. More

US women's sabre team takes gold

After a short break at the World Fencing Championships, sabre fencers embarked on a quest for medals in the team tournament. Following the preliminaries' results, the number one seeded Russian team fenced Canada and took a comfortable win, 45-28, while last year's world champion, Ukraine, confidently won their bout against Japan in the round of 32, 45-20, and the US team defeated Kazakhstan, 45-22. Germany tops men's sabre team podium

Yet another competition day wraps up at the World Fencing Championships in Kazan. The men's team sabre competition featured a Russia-vs-France meet in the quarterfinal just like in the women's event. The Opening Ceremony of the World Fencing Championships 2014 was held in the competition venue at the Kazan Tennis Academy. Spectators and distinguished guests attended the first medal events in womenís and menís sabre, which immediately followed the spectacular Opening Ceremony. The President of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), Alisher Usmanov, gave a warm welcome to the guests, sponsors, spectators, international and local media. More

First Day of Medal events in womenís and menís sabre

Early in the morning the table of 64 in menís and womenís sabre started at the main competition hall in the Kazan Tennis Academy. The table of 32 is now hosting bouts with Mariel Zagunis (USA), Vassiliki Vougiouka (GRE), Ekaterina Dyachenko (RUS), Azza Besbes,(TUN), Irene Vecchi (ITA) . The table of 64 for menís sabre will start later today. Kovalev (RUS) will take on Benjamin Igoe (USA), Ibragimov (RUS) will encounter Renzo Agresta (BRA), Yakimenko will fence Andras Szatmari (HUN).
