The Olympic qualification continued this weekend with competitions in men’s epee, women’s epee and women’s foil.
Men’s epee individual grand prix in Doha
PARK Kyoung Doo (KOR), bronze medallist at the Catania 2011 World Championships, won the men’s epee grand prix in Doha, defeating Silvio FERNANDEZ (VEN) in the final. Nikolai NOVOSJOLOV (EST) ranked third, collecting valuable points for the qualification to London 2012. Bas VERWIJLEN (NED) finished also third.
Gauthier GRUMIER (FRA), Matteo TAGLIAROL (ITA) and Jörg FIEDLER (GER) did not reach the table of 16 and are more and more under pressure for the remaining two competitions.

Women’s foil individual world cup in Tauberbischofsheim
Italy dominated the women’s foil world cup in Tauberbischofsheim (GER). Elisa Di Francisca defeated her long-time rival Valentina Vezzali in the final 5:4 (sudden death). Hyun He NAM (KOR) and Arianna Errigo (ITA) ranked third.

Women’s foil team world cup in Tauberbischofsheim
In the team competition on Sunday, Italy took revenge for the world championships final and defeated Russia 45:29. Poland ranked third, winning against Korea 29:28 and securing valuable points on the way to London 2012.
France, Germany and Hungary have to make ground in the last two team competitions in Turin (ITA) and Budapest (HUN) if they want to make the team qualification.

Women’s sabre world cup in Orléans
Mariel ZAGUNIS (USA) won the women’s sabre world cup in Orléans (FRA) against Sophia VELIKAIA (RUS), taking revenge for the lost final at the world championships in Catania 2011. Olga ZHOVNIR (UKR) and Ji Yeon KIM (KOR) finished both third. Reaching the top 8 Vassiliki VOUGIOUKA (GRE) made a big step towards qualifying for London 2012.

With three out of for podium positions at the women’s epee grand prix in Doha, team Italy had a good start into the Olympic year 2012. Mara NAVARRIA (ITA) won the final against Hyo-Jung KIM (KOR), her team mates Rossella FIAMINGO and Francesca QUONDAMCARLO finishing third.
Tiffany Geroudet (SUI) reached the top 8 and underlined her ambitions for being one of the two European fencers to qualify for London 2012 through the individual ranking.
