In 1937, the first official FIE Fencing World Championships were organised in Paris, featuring men’s epee, men’s sabre, men’s foil and women’s foil. A women’s epee event was held for the first time in 1989 and women’s sabre in 1999.
The FIE World Championships are an annual event, with the exception of years in which Summer Olympic Games take place. Events not held in the Summer Olympic Games have the FIE World Championship in the same year.
Points obtained at World Championships are multiplied by factor 2.5 in individual competitions and by factor 2 in team competitions.
Each year, the FIE awards the most successful national federation with the “Grand Prix des Nations.”
The 2013 World Championships are held from 05.08. - 12.08.2013 in Budapest, Hungary.
